ANN CASHION
Chef and Owner, Johnny's Half Shell and Taqueria Nacionale

Ann Cashion is a native of Jackson, MS, and a 1976 graduate of Harvard University. She also completed two years at Stanford University towards her doctorate in English Literature before leaving to cook professionally. She is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier, International Association of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, and the Council of Independent Restaurateurs of America. Ann has been a featured speaker at the National Museum for Women in the Arts and was included in the cookbook Women of Taste.

For the past 20 years she has worked intensively in restaurant kitchens in both the U.S. and Europe. She began her career in San Francisco, where she worked for several Bay Area establishments before traveling to Italy to apprentice at Francesco Ricchi's trattoria in the hills outside Florence. Ann left her position as executive chef of Austin Grills, Inc., to open her own restaurant, Cashion's Eat Place, in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC. The restaurant opened in May of 1995, and was voted 'Best New Restaurant' by the readership of Gourmet magazine and was prominently featured in Phyllis Richman's 50 favorites. Cashion's Eat Place has become a destination for serious diners throughout the metropolitan area, including President Clinton.

In May of 1999, with partner John Fulchino, Ann Cashion opened a second restaurant, Johnny's Half Shell. Originally located in Dupont Circle, and now on Capitol Hill, the small cafe and oyster bar features simply prepared American regional seafood with an emphasis on the culinary traditions of the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland's Eastern Shore.

In 2007 Ann sold Cashion's Eat Place and opened Taqueria Nacionale, modeling her tacos after the best taco trucks Los Angeles had to offer and her memories of her younger years noshing at taquer’as throughout southeast Texas.
